reading as dialogue

To myself, I posed a question:

If I wanted to change your life,

Which book would I give you to read?

I drew a blank and realized:

It would have to be much more

Than words on a page.

It would have to be underlined paragraphs

And highlighted phrases,

With handwritten notes in margins.

It would have to be ink-scribbled importance.

A way to create a dialogue

Between individuals performing individual acts.

Maybe I don’t want to change your life as much,

As I want you to see what has changed mine,

By turning a solo activity:

Reading a book,

Into a shared experience
